Diwali 2023

Diwali in Nursery

Nursery have been learning about Diwali, making Diya lamps, Rangoli patterns and Mehndi patterns.

Diwali - Year 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 enjoyed learning about the festival of Diwali and making Diya Lamps. We learnt about the story of Rama and Sita and how lamps were used to guide them back home to safety.

Year 3 and 4

We have researched the festival of Diwali and how Diya lamps are used within Diwali. We discovered that the lamps are lit to ward of evil and that traditionally they would be pointed facing South. We then had a go at creating our own Diya lamps.

In the year 4 classroom we created Rangoli Patterns using tissue paper. Rangoli patterns are used to decorate during the festival of Diwali and they are always symmetrical.

Year 4 also did some written work comparing the festival of Diwali to Christmas and looked at the similarities and differences.

Year 5 and 6

We worked collaboratively on two learning opportunities. We studied patterns and art seen during Diwali and images associated with Diwali such as Diva lamps, lights and colours. We designed our own Diwali celebration cards using water colours.

The second learning opportunity was to read from a wide selection of books to learn about the ways Diwali is celebrated and what traditions would be followed. We then compared the festival of Diwali to the Christian celebration of Christmas using the knowledge gained from our RE lessons in class.
