Year 5 & 6 Construction Workshop

Construction workshop - 8/2/23

M&Y Maintenance and construction.

Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to work with M&Y Maintenance and Construction, taking part in different stations and looking at different jobs within their company. They had a go at building bridges and circuits, as well as looking at the health and safety of a building site and the BID Manager of the company.

Table 1 - The company

Looking at what they do as a company and what they deliver to their customers. As well as the construction side of things, also looking at other things they do as part of their job; including working with other companies and working with charities

Table 2 - Building different bridges.

One group constructed a bridge using round pieces and the group constructed the bridge using the block pieces. Following instructions and diagrams to create both of them and working together to create bridges carefully .

Table 3 - Electrical

Different circuits to get something to work. This was either a lightbulb, a fan or a speaker which sung “Happy Birthday”. The circuits had to be carefully constructed in order for the electrical currant to travel through for it to work and we had to turn the switch on. When constructing it, we always start with the power source which is the battery.

Table 4 - Health and Safety

Looking at different  building sites, we had to identify hazards within that building site. Some were very obvious - things such as being in the site with no helmet, using equipment without safety equipment. We looked at what should be happening in these scenarios, like having warning signs and barriers around the work. Had a go at wearing the safety clothing and equipment.

At the end of the workshop, we decided which job area would suit us best and why.
Isla - “I would like to be BID Manager as I like looking after people and working with different companies

Emily - “I would like to be an electrician because I am good at building the circuits and my dad does the job too”.

Zacc - “I’m not sure as I found it tricky following the instructions to build the bridges but I liked working as a team”.
