History workshop about the Victorians

Year 4 were so excited to have a workshop with historian Adrian.

We discussed our knowledge of some changes during the Industrial Revolution such as the use of coal as an energy source. We discussed how steam was used to power trains and the impact this then had on business owners being able to sell their products further afield.

We learned how steam turned a wheel which could then be used on a train or in machinery in a factory.

After knowledge sharing we were put into small groups and had a hands on experience of children’s school toys, writing with ink pens, making a sand mould for making into an iron. We also had a look through a stereo viewer and hooked up some machinery which we made work by turning the wheels in the same way that a steam engine would have done.

We wrote some information texts to share what we had learned.
