French

Bonjour!

The Modern Foreign Language curriculum at Fulwood St Peter's focuses on French. Learning a second language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, key individuals and cultural differences. At St Peter's we want all pupils to feel able and encouraged to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2.

Our French curriculum in Key Stage 2 is designed so that pupils build the key skills of spoken language, listening, reading and writing progressively, extending their knowledge of how the language words and helping pupils explore differences and similarities between French and English. French is taught using the ‘Rachel Hawkes’ scheme of work which implements and highlights the three key knowledge strands from the recent Ofsted research report: phonics, vocabulary and grammar.

In Key Stage 1, although the teaching of languages is not statutory, children are provided with the opportunity to try new languages through story, songs and rhymes, in daily routines (for example answering the register in a variety of languages). This ensures that the enjoyment of learning a new language is embedded as children start school.
