Healthy Schools Heartbeat What's in a Drink?

Today we had a visit from Sian. She told us all about how much sugar we should have in a day. (6 teaspoons daily). This really isn't a lot. At the  start  Sian gave us a booklet to complete called Rethink your drink!. I thought that what I had to drink every day was healthy, but then I wasn't prepared for the hidden sugars or just how much sugar there was in a drink. Did you know that Oasis citrus drink for every 500ml has 5 teaspoons of sugar, which means that is almost my daily allowance in one drink. My friends and I drink water at school and at home we have Volvic with a touch of fruit for flavour, however today we learned that every  400ml of water contains 5 teaspoons of sugar.

Our class were even more surprised to learn that fresh orange juice contains over 6 teaspoons of sugar for a small glass. We were amazed because we thought that oranges made into juice would be healthy. (By RW)

Sian continued to explain about sugar and how it can cause you to be obese. She asked who drank energy drinks and lots of the class put their hands up. Sian asked when and why we drank these drinks? most of my friends just had them because they were nice, but then we learnt that we should only drink these prior to exercising because you will burn off the sugar.

FACTS THAT WE DID NOT KNOW

1. BREAD HAS ONE CUBE OF SUGAR IN EACH SLICE.

2. YOUR SMALL INTESTINES ARE AS LONG AS A DOUBLE DECKER BUS IF THEY ARE STRUNG TOGETHER.

3.A TEASPOON HOLDS 4GRAMS.

4. IT IS ALRIGHT TO DRINK AN ENERGY DRINK IF YOU BURN OFF THE FAT STRAIGHT AFTER.

5.IT IS NOT ALRIGHT TO DRINK ENERGY DRINK IF YOU DO NOT BURN OF THE FAT STRAIGHT AFTER, BECAUSE YOU RISK BECOMING OBESE!!!

6.THE LIVER IS USED TO CLEAN YOUR BLOOD.

7.YOU HAVE TWO KIDNEYS.

8. IF YOU ARE AGED 7-10 YEARS OLD, YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED 6 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR.

9. THE SUGAR YOU EAT AND DRINK TURNS INTO FAT.  (BY OK)

Sian, brought lots of resources with her and showed the class what fat looked liked under our skin. (it was yellow and sticky and it  sticks in your arteries, which is dangerous and as you get older could cause you not only to be obese, but have decaying teeth and other serious health issues, such as heart problems! ). I have learnt that caffeine is bad for young people that are around my age. I was amazed that

in one serving of tomato ketchup there was 35% sugar!! Even more surprising to me was that for every slice of bread there is 1% sugar. Something for everyone to think about. (FL)

As a class we have decided to think carefully about what we are drinking and have taken our booklets home to share with our family. I am drinking lots more water and this is good, because it doesn't have sugar and helps my kidneys.

There are lots of photographs of Sian's visit we hope your enjoy and learn something because we did.

Today Sian came to visit our school again. In our class she talked about the body and our organs. We had some understanding about our organs because we had been on the Life Bus with Susan and she explained the function of most of our organs. Sian showed us a big piece of fat and explained how that fat in our bodies can make our organs have to work much harder. We thought the fat was disgusting to look at. She then challenged us to find out what we knew about sugar. Most of the class knew that sugar was in chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks and that was because everyone in the class goes to the dentist. What we also found out and we didn't know about was the amount of sugar in drinks. DID YOU KNOW that at my age (8 years) I can only have 5 teaspoons of sugar in a day and that the sugar is worked out in 100ml of drinks, which means that there will be more sugar in a bottle of orange juice than you think. We were amazed to find out that there was sugar in our flavoured water. Some of my class like lemon and lime water, but there was 5 teaspoons of sugar in that, which is all of our daily amount. I worked out that if I had toast for breakfast and a drink of my volvic water I had eaten all of my daily allowance plus more just for breakfast. Our class have learned so much about the hidden sugars and how they can then make you organs poorly.
