During science, the children studied Sound. We discovered sounds are vibrations that can travel through different materials. The pitch of a sound is how high or low the sound is. The loudness of a sound is how loud or soft it is.

During our practical activities and research, we discovered the following:

 Separating materials. Our topic this week was all about separating mixtures.  After planning what to do, year five had to decide which piece of equipment would be necessary to extract each material from the bowl.The contents included, paper clips, foil, sand, bicarbonate of soda and water. Some of it was easy; magnets came in handy for the paper lips and the sieve for the small stones. Some of it was trickier. Was aluminium foil magnetic? How will we get the bicarbonate of soda out of the water? Problems, problems! In the end, lots of children decidedevaporation would be needed to remove it. A super science lesson enjoyed by all.
